RTX Render Open Beta (1): Overview & Getting Started

Yes I have the same problem with RTX 5070. My laptop is overheated!!

Custom CC5 Avatars Saved to Custom Content Library Cannot Initially Be Loaded in iClone 8 RTX Beta

Hi Reallusion Team,

Firstly, thank you for your quick response regarding my previous RTX Beta startup issue. Moving the RTX Beta installation to my D: drive completely resolved that problem.

While continuing my testing, I believe I have found a separate issue relating to Custom Content libraries and loading newly saved custom avatars.

System Information

GPU

  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 12GB

Software Versions

  • Character Creator 5: 5.12.1928.1
  • iClone 8 RTX Beta: 8.74.5528.1

Content Library Configuration

Both Character Creator 5 and iClone RTX Beta are configured identically.

Template Library

D:\REALLUSION\Reallusion Templates

Custom Library

D:\REALLUSION\Reallusion Custom

Both applications point to the same Template and Custom Content folders.

Issue Description

Factory CC5 HD characters load into iClone RTX Beta correctly.

However, newly created custom avatars initially cannot be loaded.

Reproduction Steps

Test 1 (No Face Tools)

  1. Open Character Creator 5.
  2. Load the stock HD Aaron character.
  3. Make no modifications.
  4. Save as a Custom Character named Aaron_Test_001.
  5. Open iClone RTX Beta.

Result

The avatar does not initially appear correctly in the configured D: Custom library.

The saved avatar was instead located in the default Public Documents Custom folder on C:.

Test 2 (After Manual Copy)

I manually dragged/copied Aaron_Test_001.ccAvatar into:

D:\REALLUSION\Reallusion Custom\Actor\Character

After doing this:

  • The avatar immediately appeared in the RTX Beta Content Manager.
  • The avatar loaded successfully into the scene.
  • The character functioned normally.

Test 3 (Face Tools Character)

I repeated the same process using a character edited with Face Tools (Facetools Test 001).

Initially:

  • The avatar produced the following error when loading:

Failed to load the file.

This file is not compatible with the application.

Please update your program to the newest version by selecting Check for Update in the Help menu.

After manually copying the avatar into the configured D:\REALLUSION\Reallusion Custom library:

  • The avatar appeared correctly in the RTX Beta Content Manager.

(At the time of writing I am continuing to test this character further.)

Observations

From my testing:

  • Factory HD CC5 characters load correctly.
  • Newly saved custom avatars appear to be written initially to the default Public Documents location on C: rather than my configured Custom Content library on D:.
  • Once manually copied into the configured D: Custom library, the avatars become available in RTX Beta.
  • The Aaron test character loads successfully after being copied to D:, indicating the avatar itself is valid.

This suggests the issue may be related to the initial save location or synchronization of newly created custom avatars rather than the avatar data itself.

Files Available

I can provide:

  • Aaron_Test_001.ccAvatar
  • Facetools Test 001.ccAvatar
  • Screenshots
  • Additional test information if required.

Thank you for your continued work on the RTX Beta. I hope the information above helps reproduce and investigate the issue.

Kind regards,

Sandro Borg

I don’t tink laptops are a good choice to run RTX ahah. Even if the graphic card is good… I will try on my work station with the RTX 3090…

Update on my RTX Open Beta testing

Just a quick update after spending a lot more time testing Character Creator 5 and iClone.

Following my original bug report, I decided to completely uninstall and reinstall both CC5 and iClone, along with all plugins and content. During the process I also reorganised my content library, moving my Reallusion content onto a dedicated drive and rebuilding the installation from scratch.

This has actually proved to be a very valuable exercise.

Rather than just testing the RTX renderer, I’ve been using a single prototype character to validate my entire production pipeline:

  • Headshot 3
  • Face Tools
  • Morph Sliders
  • Viewport Morph Controls
  • Edit Proportion
  • Edit Mesh
  • ActorMixer
  • GoZ ↔ ZBrush
  • Content management
  • Plugins and asset installation

This approach has helped identify a few installation/content issues that were unrelated to the RTX beta itself (for example missing ActorMixer preset content after the reinstall), and it’s given me much greater confidence that I’m testing the beta from a clean, known-good installation.

One suggestion for anyone testing the beta would be:

If you’ve accumulated several years of Reallusion content and plugins, it may be worth verifying your content paths and installation before reporting rendering issues, particularly if you’ve recently moved content folders or upgraded from an earlier installation.

I’ll continue testing once my reinstall is complete and will report back if I find any reproducible RTX-specific issues.

Thanks to the Reallusion team for making the beta available.

For the benefit of others: there is no need to move the content folders. I only moved the Beta folder out of Program Files and that was sufficient. The issue seems to be that during loading a project, iClone needs to write to a specific folder. Since it is located under Program Files, which has restricted write access, an error occurs.

I have recently reinstalled and moved my content directories to another drive,as space on my C drive was becoming an issue. I’d rather keep my C drive free just for program installations. With the amount of content i was creating and downloading,it made sense to put it on a separate internal drive.

Understood. I have always had my content on a separate drive, which is indeed good practice.
