The book The rats by James Herbert is one of my favourites and I’ve always wanted to do the main character Harris in a more illustrative way similar to Dishonoured or love death and robots - bad traveling

Leaning more towards the flared jeans and long hair to suit Harris. Being from east London but getting straight and sorting his live out there is still a part that is anti-establishment. This is my thinking behind the final choice of the long hair and moustache. I also go in touch with a few older people and asked what teachers would wear in the 70s and they picked the woollen vest.

Look Dev for the texturing. Since the outfit is pretty simple to save time I decided to add more story telling elements the ripped jeans, the patten on the tie, the cracked watch and the the pattern on the belt. Even though he is a teacher he is still against the narrative of the usual teacher.

Going into the hair groom I know this would be the part I had the least experience with so I wanted to take my time and get it right. Keeping my hair cards simple and making sure each card would have a secondary and tertiary to build on. Looking at the edges and paying attention to the fall off. In the past the most noticeable part of hair cards are the side being straight so making sure a few strands broke away but not uniquely enough to be noticeable.
Grooms can very quickly become overwhelming with all the strands to help nullify this a bit . I apply an colour to each of the cards. I did make the mistake of creating some kind of pastel pallet here, for the next time I’ll definitely make the inner cards a darker colour.
The hair split into base, secondary and tertiary forms. The most progress is in the primary and secondary this is where the shape is established.

Having nice hair in the 70s seemed to be a thing so spending a good while tweaking sliders till I was happy.
For anyone that might be doing hair if this is useful the settings are below.
I wasn’t originally going to do the props but I felt I owed it to the character. I was a bit a push with the dead line having started with only a month for everything. The axe is a pretty important part of the story it used at the end on the giant hairless rat.
The flash light was used to tracked down another character, descend into the basement and also illuminated the final creature.
I tried to keep everything time specific and absolutely loved texturing the flash light!
