I currently have the trial and it seems like there are very few included morphs and assets, so I’m trying to get a gauge if this software is for me or if I should just try to learn something else.
I want something like the attached images (these are AI generated inspirations).
Cartoony-pixar style.
My end goal is to use morphs and sliders (or headshot?) to be able to generate characters that resemble family and friends, so I can 3d print them and give them as gifts (not necessarily for this holiday season, just over time).
I know I’ll need to import them into blender, and I’m learning that now.
So right now, I’m really debating between CC4 or just learning some blender.
I tried the headshot trial and the morphs don’t seem to be included. And the morphs that I can find in the free section can’t get me close enough to what I’m after. I’ve used the free character base and loaded the stylized toon, but that doesn’t have much flexibility without add-ons. So again, my hope is that someone here could show me the addons I would need in order to accomplish this, so that I can make an informed decision.
As far as I can tell, I can’t really trial many of the addons so I’m asking the community!
Hey there! Sounds like you have a fun project in mind! Since the style you’re after is quite different from the base meshes in CC4, you will likely need to sculpt and manipulate the CC4 base mesh in another software package like Belnder or Zbrush to achieve the look you want.
I would recommend checking out Michael Pavlovich’s videos on YouTube, he has a wealth of information on the subject. You can see in this short preview video that he uses CC4 morphs to push the base mesh in the direction that he wants, but then takes it over to Zbrush to really take it to the next level:
After you’ve created your new, altered CC4 base mesh, you’ll be able to use CC4 to easily pose your characters. Just note that you’ll need to bring them back into something like Zbrush to ensure they are watertight for 3D printing. There’s a lot to learn but if you have the drive, you’ll have a lot of fun with this!
You can absolutely do this look in CC4. I’m putting together a Customize Your Toon tutorial, but I’m a work bind and it’s going to be a couple weeks before it’s out.
In short, form I use Toon Figures base, morph with what’s included with them, and then convert them to CC3+ characters and use the Headshot morphs to do more. I only use Headshot for the morphs, and I find it essential to just about every character I make, Toon or not, so I’d say that one is absolutely necessary. You could start with any Toon pack on the Content store, and I’ve found skin look is more important than shape for toon looks, because you can shape them without ever leaving CC4, but if you want them to look older, for example, that’s more in the skin than the shape for a Toon.
You and I are on the same wavelength! I saw your “Toon Me” short on Youtube a few days ago and couldn’t figure out how to find the full video if you had a tutorial. I have a few of your videos bookmarked to come back to. I also really like both of those people’s stuff and I wish I could afford to buy more, but I’m starting from scratch.
I bought CC4, Headshot, Ultimate Morphs, Toon Figures + Hair and am about broke after all that. I know there’s still a good sale going on now but sheesh, this is not a cheap hobby.
If you have any sort of a guide or guidance on how I’d make characters in that style, please reply to this once you make it! For now I’m just messing around and I feel like I actually made a mistake by getting so many things because I’m not sure all of the little morphs are necessary because toon figures need to be pretty basic… but I’m sure eventually I’ll know I made the right decision.
I will absolutely let you know when it’s made: soon. My work-crazy will end next weekend, so probably middle of the following week. (Unless I play hookey there to make this first because this would be a lot more fun).
With what you bought and what comes with, you have plenty to start with. Noodle around and get comfortable with the software and I’ll post again when it’s up.
