I’d like to know if I can base my work on an existing concept or a well-known character, or if I should create something original from scratch. And how much does that factor into the evaluation of the final work?

You can usually use an existing concept as inspiration, but it is safer to build your own interpretation rather than recreating a recognizable character directly. Contest rules often require entrants to own the work and avoid copyrighted designs, so an original character with your own story, silhouette, costume, and details is the strongest option.
For judging, originality normally matters alongside modeling quality, texturing, presentation, and how well you use the tools. A familiar concept may help people understand the idea quickly, but a unique design is more likely to stand out and avoid any eligibility concerns. Check the official rules before committing, especially the sections on copyright and ownership.
