Been playing with Omniverse recently (just scratched the surface) to see if it’s a viable option rendering without much hassle. I picked an old project I made some 5 years ago in iClone7 and offered for download as a customize challenge. Had to brush it a bit first in iClone8 as some motion conversion failed (like for animated bottle). Characters are CC3 (not plus).
To my surprise there was not much I had to do after USD import (light rig tweaking mostly). Hair physics for one character was imported as alembic.
It did render fairly well in iClone at the time, but Omniverse added the “missing link” - correct occlusion and reflections. Rendered in path-trace mode with about 5 frames per minute. Anyway here is result…
Separately checked the soft body physics option and attempted to make some smoke…
Yes, this render look quite a bit better than the iClone version (which looked pretty good for an iClone render). Around 12 seconds per frame is still pretty fast.
The soft-body physics could perhaps be improved by making the joint areas “softer” than e.g. the shoes which should not deform much.
The smoke in the third example needs a little love IMO, but maybe that is an Omniverse limitation.
Yes, Ominverse is really cool. However, I’m worried about what will happen after 1 October 2025 when the launcher is no longer up to date. I’m wondering what will happen then.
Since there is only soft body physics in Omniverse, I had to cheat big time to make some sort of ragdoll .
The one that is animated is character. And then it’s swapped with skeleton-less prop copy. I will check, but I do not think there is a way to give different weights to different body parts for physics. There are only global controls.
Yeah, I need to play with it more, Control are not as advanced as we have them in generic popcorn effects in iClone, but I may have to rebuild a sprite template (which I basically grabbed from dry ice popcorn FX)
We probably have to wait and see what RL has to say bout it. But according to NVIDIA, Composer can be installed as stand alone app.
I have tried the installation following the instructions. That was really difficult. That’s why it didn’t finally work. The programme does not start for me.
I hope that Reallusion is pursuing an appropriate path here. Because for me, Ominverse is an ideal addition to Iclone. Especially when you look at all the physics.
I did install standalone today and it worked for me. The only thing I am missing, is a few tools/options and no NVIDIA Assets and Assets Stores content tabs. First composer launch took about 10 min to start (but that was expected).
I will be using the original one from Launcher for now until further instructions from RL.
