Omniverse October 1 changes

I have read about upcoming changes to the omniverse ecosystem, and I’m wondering how that will affect Iclone users as of that date. Will Live link still be an option then? Is Omniverse still up there as a viable alternative to UE5 or Unity? Just curious…

In my opinion, Omniverse was a quick fix to replace Iray, but now Unreal Engines is seen as the better alternative.

Would be interesting to know if Reallusion still cares about Omniverse. They usually simply stop updating if something isn’t worth it for them. The same happened with the Leap Motion integration which technically still works, but you need ancient drivers which are not supported by other applications that use Leap Motion, so you constantly need to uninstall and install different driver versions.

Omniverse has the big advantage that you can simply import a complete iClone scene without dealing with the UE complications. So it would be sad if RL gave up on that, because I don’t see UE is a viable alternative for me.

I do agree that the import process is way more streamlined, and while it’s nice to have live link, it’s not a dealbreaker for me personally. I hope work arounds will soon be in place as it does seem more viable to me than UE as well…

There were just two topics about Omniverse with not much of a response, except to use feedback tracker:

Hi there, I’am very concerned about the announcement of stopping Omniverse Launcher oct 2025. I asked Kai de Neve about this but he mailed me that he has had no notification that this message is a problem for the Iclone users. He wrote that he hadn’t heard of this change. So I don’t know what to do now because I started learning Omniverse for rendering only and perhaps all my efforts are ‘lost time’ and that forced me to Unreal Engine and I’am not enthusiastic about that program. Do you have more information about the deprecating of the Omniverse Launcher regarding Iclone8?

After reading through more documentation @Nvidia, it seems as though there will still be some free version of omniverse available after they are out of Beta. As to the live link access, it gets murkier. All current nucleus apps used for iclone to link with Omniverse will only be available in the enterprise version, which would be cost prohibitive to most of Reallusion’s users. I am not aware of any updates from Reallusion on this front, but that makes me hesitant to use this platform for rendering. Hopefully there’s more clarity as we get closer to October…

this has been my fear for 3rd party programs and relying heavily on 3rd party to enhance iClone’s functionality carries the risk of those apps being discontinued, impacting iClone’s efficiency. We urge improvement of the iClone native engine to mitigate dependence on external programs. Future uncertainties, such as if example Unreal Engine potentially dropping iClone support, highlight the need for a robust, self-sufficient iClone ecosystem, preventing the constant search for alternative rendering solutions. at least give us raytracing

I’am happy that I’am not the only one with concerns about Omniverse. But Unreal can do the same. I’am waiting for a good render Engine in Iclone so that 3 rd party Engines are not langer neccesary. That makes animation really easier. It costs me a lot of time to make connection with Omniverse and also with Unreal. And after that you must learn both programs for navigation and other stuff that don’t work as shown in all kind of video’s. But Kai de Neve mailde me that he saw no forthcoming problems with Omniverse so let’s wait and see. But untill then I don’t know in which program I must invest for learning a bit off the functionalities.

Hopefully there is another option for live link put in place by then. UE for sure will be an option.
Blender will be another one to take a look at.
I also started experimenting with Twinmotion, which has a realtime renderer that can use Lumen RT like you can in UE. Also has a path tracer renderer that outputs renders on par with Iray. There are definitely materials that need adjusted on import, mainly hair and eye opacity maps. Still experimenting but worth looking into for sure…

Markom3D posted a YouTube video on how to install Omniverse via github:

He goes a bit too fast and it would be helpful if RL would post something on how to make it work with iC/CC Connector.
