New Video Card - 5070 Ti slow

I just installed a new video card nVidia 5070Ti with 16 gig memory. A render that took 2.25 minutes on my old video card is now taking 1/2 hour. If I watch Performance, it’s using CPU and Memory but not GPU - it’s at zero percent.

On the stage, the Video is showing as 16 available but only using 3.6. On my old card, the video usage was high and constantly moving about.

Before I go back to the shop for help, is there possibly a setting I am missing somewhere?

Some basic questions: Is your monitor connected to your GPU instead of the computers motherboard? Have you tried to force iClone running on your GPU via right clicking on the Desktop shortcut?

As far as I know, my two monitors are connected to the motherboard, same as previous. I don’t have a desktop shortcut for iClone 8, I’ll try to figure out how to get one.

I got a desktop icon now but I don’t know how I force it to run from GPU.

Seems like Microsoft removed the right click option. :grimacing:

Please watch this video. This is how it should work now:

Definitely connect them to the GPU. Sometimes the GPU won’t even work if nothing is connected to it. Other times the signal has to be send from the GPU back to the CPU and then out to the monitors which will reduce performance.

Sorry, just been through some stuff with my son. The monitors are plugged into the video card.

iClone and CC4 have been set up through nvidia to use the graphics card as GPU. When I do an iray render in iClone, initially you see activity by the GPU when the scene is setting up to render, but the minute the second box that shows the progress of the render pops up, it no longer shows any activity of the GPU and it’s very slow. Takes close to 1/2 hour where before it was a couple of minutes.

So, is it actually iray that doesn’t like the new video card? I should mention that when rendering, if I click the “Hardware box” and uncheck CPU - the render just stops and says there is no CUDA capable GPU.

I think you need to set it up in the Windows Display settings as shown in the video above. Nvidia Control panel setting will be ignored. Have you tried that?

Yes, we did that according to the video - made no difference. I also just did a clean install of the previous driver I had that worked - testing now - nope, no difference. :frowning:

It is iRay, not your computer. You just need to tell iRay to use the card in the iRay hardware settings.

OMG Rampa, I was at the end of the street with my husband on the way to return the damn card - lol. So I am back and will try this now - thank you!

Oh wait…when we unchecked the CPU box and the video card is checked - the iray message came up with no CUDA processor available or something like that.

I was reading on my phone, we already had gone through that and it was not working -

As soon as I uncheck CPU - the render stalls and says no CUDA processor available.

Install the latest driver from Nvidia.

Could be a defective card though, and need returning.

Took it back to the shop - they spent over 2 hours trying everything to make it work - attempted renders, the GPU would not engage. Ended up putting my old card back - tested a render - no problem, kicked in right away. So I got a refund.

So…the 5,000 series cards might not be compatible with iClone at this point…or should I say iRay. And if RL are not supporting iRay anymore, then maybe they will never be compatible - will be interesting to see if anyone else runs into issues.

For anyone that is interested, I found a thread referring to DAZ where they discuss that the 5000 series cards are not compatible with iRay. Apparently DAZ has said they intend to make them compatible at some point in the future but nobody knows when. As Reallusion have already said they do not intend to continue to support iRay as a plugin render engine, then upgrading a video card at this point will mean no more using iRay.

The alternative they suggested of Omniverse is ok sometimes, but Omniverse is also being deprecated in October. I did write to RL about alternatives and they suggested Unreal Link - I have not tried that yet. What I like about iRay is that is can capture the clothing with physics so you can properly see how a cloth flows but Omniverse cannot do this and I wonder if Unreal Link is able - somehow I doubt it. Not to mention that without these things being a plugin, it becomes pretty tedious to make good renders for promos.

Anyway, now I know the issue was iRay not being compatible with the 5000 series.

Perhaps you should look into getting a 4000 series card if you need an upgrade over the older card you have at the moment. Provided, of course, that that series supports iRay…

That said, long-term you should probably look at other render options, even if they are not as convenient as iRay.

Is there anyone with a 4070 Ti Super with 16 gig mem card willing to do a test iRay render if I send you a project?

Daz had to rush out a crippled alpha build of Daz studio (Version 6.x) to satisfy users who already bought 5 series cards.
It works with the latest Iray ATM but it is best to just avoid Iray and use omniverse as Iray has no future.

I have a 4060 Ti, which also has 16 GB. I don’t have Iray installed at the moment but I’m willing to do so and see if it works. For old time’s sake as it were…

It likely will work as the version of Iray that Reallusion (wisely abandoned) is the old one that works with All of the previous 2,3,4 series GPU’s.
the latest(and possibly final), version of Iray is required to use the New 5 series GPU’s.

Anyone who is planning on using the defunct Iray
version for Iclone , and is unwilling to use omniverse, should avoid getting a 5 series card as there will be no more Iray updates from Reallusion.

What about the issue that Omniverse is not going to be available to us after October? I get the message that it will be deprecated then - I wrote to RL and asked about that and they answered I should learn to use Unreal Link for renders.
