Moving Iclone content to a new PC without re-downloading?

Hi all,

Some time back a failed motherboard led me to buy a new PC. The old PC hard disc was kept and I can see all the Reallusion assets which I bought over the years.

Having copied my content from the old PC disc to the identical path on the new PC it looks like I will still need to re-download most of it over again. When I go to the Smart Gallery tab in Iclone 7 (which is the version I use), almost everything is in the ‘Not Installed’ category.

I could very well be wrong but I seem to recall that I downloaded those same assets multiple times.

On both discs the path is ‘C:/Program Files/Reallusion/Iclone7’

This video might help https://youtu.be/sLhFZPuZF1k?si=1vdWcXH338eApkSQ especially around the 2:48 mark, where Kai discusses items that have been moved. You might just need to ‘move location’, even if it’s still the same directory path. Good luck.

Thank you so much for the video link. I’m just about dropping asleep but looked quickly at it and it seemed to require that the items be downloaded before manipulating the path references. The downloads are for me very slow which led to my appeal for help.

However … the next video which automatically followed (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VR1JHlQlIts) seemed to be spot on for my problem!
It talks about the Smart Content needing to be sync’d before it stops being greyed out and speaks about content which has been moved from the original default folders. I’ll re-visit these videos in the morning when I’m more awake!

Thanks for your great help and the trouble you went to providing the video link.

From what I recall, if the contents are in the expected location, installation will go fairly quickly and only involves synchronization with the database. You can speed things up by selecting multiple items and right-click install. I believe that works also for iClone 7.

Thanks to you also, Animagic, for replying.

Today I looked again at the video and saw both installs of CC3 and Iclone 7 go through the synch process at start-up and again via the menu but there still remained all the greyed-out items. Maybe they weren’t all downloaded at the time of my computer failure.

My recollection of downloading the same items in the past multiple times may have been due to the move from Iclone 6 to Iclone 7. (I can’t recall when Smart Content first appeared). There might have been some other reason such as a new hard disc - I can’t remember.

But, since today I’ve been downloading content the slow way I can say that I’m still not sure what is going on. It has just taken (I reckon) an hour to download the Gothic Statues pack in Iclone 7. That done, I’ve just re-opened CC3 to find that, even after synching, the Gothic Statue pack is greyed out in the Smart Content tab.

Using old versions of the software, I may be encountering problems which revisions sorted and don’t want this to be a waste of anyone’s time. Even so, I can’t really understand the use of motion packs, for example being in the Character Creator Smart library. Are there two Smart Libraries - one for each software?

In the end I only really want the software working fully again to judge whether to upgrade with the present CC5 / $339 spend deal or whether to see what can be done with what I have.

Since the very end of last year when I bought a VR headset I’ve been amazed by a whole new world of creative possibilities and am seriously impressed to discover that Iclone can render videos in Side by Side format. This means that a headset user should be able to experience being in the scene at whatever position the camera is in and be able to look around. I sent a small test to a fellow headset user who emailed that it worked but I don’t know how he accessed the Side by Side video from his PC to the headset and haven’t had a reply from my call.

This VR topic could be a whole new thread… Elsewhere DAZ users were keenly discussing finding a way to enter DAZ scenes in VR and Iclone 7 seems to have been able to do it all along - with animation!

The database has improved for IC8 and CC4 but it can still be finicky. I have had trouble with migrating but I have a fast internet so it wasn’t too bad. In IC7 and CC3 there were more problems, especially with legacy content. You could try contacting support. There is an option to reset the database with a batch file, which may help, but I’m not sure.

In IC8 and CC4, there are still two Smart Galleries (now called Smart Content Manager), but content that can be shared (props for example) is shared. The Smart Content Manager also works for custom content. So there have been improvements.

Whether to upgrade to IC8 depends as to what you want to do. I always keep up-to-date. There have been many enhancements. For example, the animation system has been overhauled, and there is a whole system of lower-poly characters and associated motions for crowd simulation.

With every version the software becomes more complicated so that is a downside.

Thanks for the clear reply, Animagic, which has helped me to understand things better.

The slow downloads on my setup are a pain but I’m getting through them and I won’t need to trouble Support.

If I was sure I could persevere in getting good use of the software I’d upgrade in a heartbeat. But, for now, there isn’t time for me to use everything I have for multiple hobbies and interests.

I’m not critical of Reallusion in any way but at the time of the release of Iclone8 and CC4 my Government started adding 20% tax on top. My resentment at paying that and the need for a new PC led me not to upgrade at that time.

In the last couple of days I looked at Unreal on the web and at a thread here but going down that route would take me another lifetime which I don’t have.

Even back in the days of Iclone 5, some of the best renders of users were impressive enough to satisfy me (with the exception of vegetation). A user called Txon used to make impressive, futuristic battle scenes, for example. There was, arguably, a nice charm about the appearance of early work made even in Iclone 3.

The software, Vue, became free last year along with Speedtree and I haven’t begun to use them (Poser fits well with them it seems) so perhaps for me enough is more than enough - although I probably will upgrade!

I hope my ramblings aren’t too boring.

Thanks again for all replies.

Not at all! That is what this forum is for, having conversations and exchanging ideas. I stick with iClone/CC because I have alot of time (and money) invested in it and at 75 completely switching pipelines isn’t worth it. I render in iClone 8 and then I use After Effects to get the cartoon/graphic novel look I’m after.
