I have purchased pretty much the whole pipeline, apart from Mo-cap stuff, and love it, but I would like to step outside the pipeline enough to assure that I can have rights to my unique, self-produced models as objects I can sell or give away. To be clear, I mean ones I built entirely in ZBrush and Blender, not ones using the Reallusion CC Pipeline or base meshes. However I’d like to be able to animate these models in iClone 8. Is there anyway that I can do both?
If I build a skeleton from scratch in rough imitation of the CC structure and rig the model myself outside the pipeline, could I still import, link the skeleton and do animations with that model that are not for sale but only to render for other uses? Remember, I want to sell or give away only the model.
If the character model itself is 100% your own work and no Reallusion content is used with the character, then you are free to sell the character model in any way you wish.
However, if the character uses any Reallusion content such as clothing, hair, shoes, morphs, textures etc., then you can’t sell the character other than in the Reallusion Stores.
For the Reallusion motions used, these obviously can’t be resold, but you can use them in any promotional videos for the character model.
I should have been more clear about one thing I want to make sure of. I’ve been lead to believe elsewhere on the internet that If I use the free stand-alone Auto Rigger or the one built into CC4 on my own model, I then am subject to license limitations on distribution and sales. Is that correct, or if the model is otherwise my own in every way can I still sell the model? Must I make my custom skeleton to be free from restrictions in this case?
The unique topology and character rig remains Reallusion’s property.
You may sell, distribute, and publish your character creations for commercial use in image or video outputs, games, XR, interactive online services.
However, you cannot sell a 3D model created from Character Creator’s Base Model or Character Rig as a content asset in any third-party marketplaces regardless of the file format used.
If you want to sell characters in 3rd party stores then they should be 100% your own work including mesh and rig.
