Best practice to create a flexible character - What is feasible in development and what is only feasible in CTA?

Hi, i’ve watched and tried out so many CTA tutorials over the last few days that I think I’ve lost my way a bit.

I have questions about the workflow. I would like to explain my goal first. I want to create a character in Affinity Designer and be able to easily customize it to efficiently create different characters and animate them.

  • Female or male: face, figure
  • Hairstyles, beard, moustache
  • Change clothes
  • Change colors of clothing (pants, sweater, sleeves)
  • Extras such as glasses, cigarette, earrings etc.

What can you build directly into the layers in Affinity Designer to be able to select all these properties in CTA?

How do you customize the character in CTA? What is best loaded into the Content Manager, what can be changed via the Sprite Editor in Stage Mode, what in Composer Mode? Or is it easiest to create the figure in Affinity Designer by showing the respective layers and then importing into CTA?

What is the best practice if you want to define the facial expressions for a figure exactly? For example, the character should only have 6 expressions in total. Can this be achieved using a specific Affinity Designer layer structure or is it only possible with the Face Key Editor? If it is only possible with the Face Key Editor, how and where can I save these created facial expressions and reuse them if I use a figure again in another project?

Greetings René
