Advice on Custom Build Please

My custom build from 2018 is in the USA and I’m in Lisbon Portugal and need a new one. My tendency is always to go with the latest Nvidea card (my former build had dual Titans) but now I’m wondering whether it’s worth the extra $ to get a 5080 gaming trio as opposed to a simple 5080. I apologize if I’m putting this request in the wrong place; I’ve been out of the loop for a couple of years.

The old forum had a General category for such topics. but this one doesn’t, so this is fine place to post.

I used to build my own systems, but with the GPU shortage a few years ago it was cheaper to just buy the system and I got a Dell Alienware R12 with a 3090.

It was OK, but could have been better. Last year I wanted to upgrade and after reading reviews again chose Dell with an Alienware R16 with a RTX 4090, which has worked well.

For iClone I would like a GPU that runs cool and is quiet under load, so in that sense any card with those characteristics would be fine. It’s unfortunate that EVGA no longer makes GPUs because that has been my prefered brand for years.

For a recent modest build I choose MSI and that has been working OK. It is worthwhile to check out reviews. There are some YouTube reviewers that focus on creative applications and those are the ones you want to pay attention too.

A lot of gaming-oriented reviews don’t consider VRAM, and the amount of VRAM is more important than raw speed. I see that the 5080 has 16 GB, which is good. The 4090 has 24 GB and I have used that at times. With improved looks comes increased texture size and that takes up VRAM.

The 4090 doesn’t seem to be available anymore at a reasonable price as that would have been a good choice.

Thank you so much. I purchased one with a 5090 so that should work well. Quick question, though. My old animation machine is in the U.S. and hasn’t been turned on in 300 plus days. I won’t be back there until Christmas. Will I have any problems installing my software on the new machine? Or do I need to disable the licenses on the old machine (which may not even work now, of course, having sat for almost a year). Any advice or help would be appreciated.

It is always best to uninstall on your old PC first while connected to the internet because that will free up a seat. If that is not possible you can deactivate a seat on the Registration page of your user account:

  1. Search for the specific product (like I do here for iClone 7).
  2. Click “Details” and a listing of the computers on which the software is installed will appear.
  3. Click “Deactivate Now” for the computer for which you want to uninstall the software. This will free a seat.

You can do this up to 10 times, but you can always contact Support to reset the count.
